Bowling for Rhinos
An event to save the endangered Rhinoceros and its unique habitat.

The Portland Chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers  (AAZK) invites you to join us for the 15th annual...Bowling for Rhinos!   Saturday, April 24, 2004, 12:00 noon or 3:00 p.m. Sunset Lanes, 12770 SW Walker Road, Beaverton, Oregon

Show your support for this worthwhile and successful conservation program--It's easy to participate! Bowl with us or sponsor a bowler(s).

• Print out our registration form and pledge sheet form, or pick up your form at the Oregon Zoo and send to the zoo to receive your pledge sheets.
• OR Register on-line. E-mail your name, address, phone number, the time you want to bowl and the names of your team members to: .
• Collect pledges from sponsors in support of you or your team's bowling. All fulfilled pledges are tax-deductible.
• Come out and bowl and have fun on April 24th at 12 p.m. or 3 p.m. We have lots of door prizes and a terrific raffle!
• Each bowler pays $7.00 to bowl. Shoes are free!

Use of Bowling for Rhino's Funds
One hundred percent of all funds raised are sent directly of three rhino conservation projects protecting four species of rhino, their habitats and hundreds of other endangered plants and animals. Unfortunately, the battle to save the rhino is far from over. Poaching for their horns continues as does the steady loss of the areas in which they live. The population of Black rhinos has dwindled to less than 2,600 individuals. The only real hope for this species to survive is on protected sanctuaries.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Isiolo, Kenya
AAZK's Bowling For Rhinos funds have been used to completely fence the Ngare Sergoi rhino sanctuary and Ngare Ndare Forest Preserve. This has created a 65,000 acre haven where black rhinos, white rhinos, and many other species flourish. Funds have also purchased an airplane and truck for spotting and relocating animals, and funded security patrols for protecting rhinos. The annual running cost of the conservancy is over $600,000.

Ujung Kulon National Park, Java, Indonesia
Ujung Kulon is a 300 square mile park that is home to some of the rarest plants and animals on earth including that last 47 Javan rhinos. BFR funds maintain and train "Rhino Patrol Units" (RPU) which are the only proven method to effectively protect and conserve these tropical forest rhinos. The annual operational cost of Ujung Kulon is $75,000

Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia
This national park is a 3,568 square km protected area on the island of Sumatra, which is home to Asian elephant, tiger, clouded leopard, Malayan sun bear and the last 400 Sumatran rhinos. Due to the size and vulnerability of the park, 5 RPU teams are needed. BFR funds are used to maintain these RPUs, which have annual budget of $60,000.
